Caritas helped people affected by the floods

Many regions of the Czech Republic saw heavy flooding in June. Caritas reacted to the floods within hours. It set up a collection account and crisis centers, monitored the situation, and passed on information in the affected areas and to the general public. Caritas is a network of more than 350 Caritas entities in the Czech Republic (on the level of dioceses, cities, regions, parishes). The whole network worked together as one.

Caritas entities in regions not affected by the flooding organized aid for those areas that were affected.

Our Caritas of the Archdiocese opened several crisis centers in the first few days and three storage centers for humanitarian aid, where we collected material donations from organizations and individuals. From there we sent aid each day to dozens of affected places. We gave people who had been evacuated from their homes a place to stay. After the flooding subsided, we kept monitoring in all parishes in the Archdiocese and then distributed material and financial aid to 1,500 households based on their needs.

I would like to offer great thanks to the selfless workers in our parish Caritas, especially the parish Caritas in Roudnice nad Labem and Neratovice. Other parish Caritas organizations also did a lot of good work, such as Kralupy nad Vltavou, Příbram, Prague Chodov, among others. Without the tireless help of people in these parishes we would not have been able to help as effectively as we did.

The flooding also affected some facilities belonging to the Caritas of the Archdiocese of Prague. Tthe Mukařov Senior Home had the yard, basement and boiler room flooded. The situation was most critical in the directorate building and especially the St. Christopher Guest House, where the water rose to 1.2 meters. The guest house had to be renovated, which put it out of commission for about six months.
